What is Scales Trainer?
Scales Trainer is an iOS app for teachers and learners to increase their fluency with ABRSM scales and arpeggios requirements. It has been designed to tackle the boredom and repetitiveness often associated with typical scales practice.
Developed by ABRSM, this useful tool features a variety of fun musical challenges to help users learn scales and prepare effectively for our exams. Using unique and creative workouts, it helps build confidence playing scales and arpeggios from memory and improve overall technique.
How can I use Scales Trainer?
Scales Trainer is a flexible tool that can be used by learners at home or by teachers and students together in lessons. Its interactive nature means you can play along with your instrument and develop your skills effectively as you practise.
Within the app you can refer to notation and listen to example performances of every scale and arpeggio at Grades 1 to 5. What’s more, throughout the app you can listen to or play scales at exam tempo or choose to slow them down or speed them up as you increase in confidence.
You might find the app useful to track your progress and monitor which scales you need to focus on. By recording your scales and arpeggios, and comparing them to examples, you’re encouraged to listen and reflect critically, rate your practice and keep an eye on your progress.
Most importantly, the app can be used to inject fun into practice and celebrate the importance of scales in relation to making music. Use the on-board Scales Trainer band to perform your scales and arpeggios along to a variety of accompaniment styles!
Finally, a built-in quiz function allows you to take a break from routine practice and test yourself randomly on ABRSM requirements for your grade.
